Mather Field Road Is Doing Two Jobs This Fall

October 1, 2026

Walk the three hundred address numbers between 3270 and 3581 Mather Field Road and you pass a taco counter, a convenience store, a boba and banh mi shop, and a Brazilian bakery, four businesses that have nothing to do with each other except the same six digits at the start of their street address. Keep going past that stretch, toward the north end of the road, and you hit a different Mather entirely: a golf course built for pilots, a sports complex beside the Sacramento VA Medical Center, and an airport runway that turns into a spectator event twice a year. Same road. Two very different reasons to be on it.

That split is not a coincidence of geography. It comes from a former military installation returning to civilian use one piece at a time, with each piece finding its own purpose and its own audience. Mather Field Road is the spine that still connects both halves, which is why this fall it is carrying a chamber golf tournament, an upcoming two day airshow, and a run of small storefronts all within the same few weeks, none of them coordinating with the others.

The Food End of the Road

If you are looking for what actually changed on Mather Field Road recently, it is not the airport and it is not the golf course. Both of those have been doing the same thing for decades. The change is in the low 3000s and high 3500s, where a run of independently owned food businesses has filled in enough that you can treat the street as a real lunch or coffee stop rather than a pass-through to somewhere else.

Business Address What it's known for
Taqueria Los Compadres 3270 Mather Field Rd Tacos, birria, breakfast burritos, dog-friendly patio seating
My Goods Market 3329 Mather Field Rd Neighborhood convenience store
Fusion 3360 Mather Field Rd Boba, banh mi, Vietnamese food, coffee
Mimo Bake Studio 3581 Mather Field Rd, Ste A Brazilian bakery and cafe, açaí bowls, pão de queijo, crepiocas

Mimo Bake Studio is worth a closer look because it is the newest addition and the most specific. It is a women-owned bakery built around Brazilian recipes, gluten-free options alongside the traditional ones, and a small market case inside stocking imported Brazilian products next to items from other local small businesses. The coffee program comes from a partnership with Brewing Bean Coffee, another women-owned operation, rather than an in-house roast. That is two small businesses sharing a counter, which is a more specific arrangement than "local bakery opens on Mather Field Road" would suggest.

A separate guide to Rancho Cordova coffee shops groups Mather Field Road and nearby Gold Center Drive as their own pocket, distinct from the denser Sunrise Boulevard strip, and names Cafe De Lori and Golden Bean Cafe alongside Mimo as the options in that stretch. None of these are chains. That matters less as a marketing detail and more as a practical one: if you are comparing Mather Field Road to a shopping center anchored by a drive-through coffee brand, you are comparing it to the wrong thing. This is a corridor of small operators, not a franchise row.

The city has noticed the road too, just from the infrastructure side. Mather Field Road is one of six corridors named in Rancho Cordova's Corridor Enhancement Plan, a beautification and upgrade study the city council received and filed in November 2024. It is a slow-moving planning document, not a construction timeline, but it confirms the road is on the city's radar as an entry corridor worth investing in, which lines up with what has actually shown up storefront by storefront.

The Other End Runs on a Different Clock

Head the other direction on Mather Field Road and the calendar stops being about lunch and starts being about the base's old military footprint, which is still doing double duty as recreation space and event ground.

Mather Golf Course sits inside roughly 1,400 acres of Mather Regional Park. It opened in 1958 for exclusive use by the military before later becoming a public course, and it holds status as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, one of the first twenty-five courses in California to earn that designation. The course's own site notes rattlesnakes sunning on the rock outcrops and wild turkeys working the rolling hills, which is a strange thing to read on a golf course website until you remember this land was never designed as a golf course in the first place. It was repurposed.

That repurposing is exactly why the Rancho Cordova Area Chamber just ran its 28th Annual Golf Tournament there, held this past Friday, September 25. The chamber does not run it like a country club event. The format includes a hole where you tee off from wherever a thrown bowling ball lands, a margarita and barbecue stop partway through the round, and a poker run where players collect a card at each tee and try to build the best hand by the eighteenth hole. A foursome runs $700 and a tee sponsorship is $490, priced as a business networking event wrapped around golf rather than the other way around.

About two weeks after that tournament, the airport takes its turn. The California Capital Airshow returns to Mather Airport on October 10 and 11, with this year's program built around the 250th anniversary of the country's founding. It is the same runway that has hosted the show in past years, which is worth stating plainly: this is a recurring fixture, not a new addition to Mather's calendar, even though it is the single loudest thing that happens on this stretch of road all year.

The Sports Complex Sits in the Middle

Between the food cluster and the airport and golf course sits Mather Sports Complex, which does not belong to either end of the story. It is a regional sports facility with fields for softball, baseball, and soccer, plus a skate park and playground outdoors. Indoors, the Mather Sports Center runs basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and racquetball courts alongside a weight room, cardio room, and dance studio. The complex sits next to the Sacramento VA Medical Center and less than a mile from Mather Airport, close enough to both worlds that it functions as connective tissue rather than an extension of either one.

This is the piece of Mather that runs on the most ordinary clock of the three: league nights, open gym hours, kids on the skate park ramps on a weekday afternoon. It does not get an annual write-up the way the airshow does, and it does not have a chamber tournament attached to it, but it is the part of the old base footprint that turned into daily use rather than an annual event or a still-developing retail strip.

What the Split Actually Tells You

None of this is a story about Mather becoming something new. The airshow and the golf tournament are legacy fixtures tied to what this land used to be. The food cluster on Mather Field Road is the part that has genuinely filled in on its own timeline, business by business, without a redevelopment plan attached to it. Both things are true on the same street at the same time, and neither one is waiting on the other. If you are trying to get a read on Mather this fall, the honest version is not one calendar. It is two, running the same road in opposite directions.
